Daily Work Role Stressors and Dark Triad States

Abstract. Organizational research on the dark triad has, so far, focused individual differences in employees’ stable tendencies to act manipulative, grandiose, or callous ways (i.e., traits). Research momentary expressions of Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy states) work situations that may trigger them is still its infancy. Based conservation resources theory, we hypothesized daily role ambiguity conflict deplete self-control which, turn, related expression states. To test our hypotheses, conducted two diary studies across 5 10 workdays. Consistent with expectations, days when employees experienced more than usual, they were likely express their darker side personality. In contrast, hypotheses about detrimental effects mediating depletion not supported.
